How it works

Find it. Ask to join. Show up.

  1. A feed card with a photo of a mug of coffee on an open book: hosted by Priya, Book
swap and coffee, tagged Books & Reading, Oct 26 2026 at 11:00 AM at Davis Square
Plaza, 0.2 miles away, matching the interest Book Club, Verified, and 3 of 10 going
with about $5 a person to spend.

    Find something near you

Ranked by distance and by the interests on your profile, so what surfaces is close enough to reach and something you'd want to do. Search by activity, venue or category.

  2. The foot of an Outing's page. Who's going, 3 of 12: three verified members, their
names cut short on screen — Priya, marked Host, Marcus and Elena — pictured by a
sunflower, a dog and a cat. Below, a switch reading “First time doing this”, and a
                    button reading Request to join.

    Ask to join

Every Outing has a host, and the host decides who comes. Outings can be open to everyone, limited to friends, or invite-only.

  3. The middle of an Outing's page: the host's description — “A friend's trio is
playing on the hill by the Powder House. Blankets, a thermos, and an afternoon of
standards before it gets too cold.” — then the tags Live Music and Jazz, and a What
to bring list with one item, a blanket.

    Show up

You get the venue, the times, what's included and what to bring. Add it to your calendar, check in on arrival, share photos afterwards.

Your feed

Not everything in it has a host yet.

Most of what you'll see is an Outing — someone has organised it and you can ask to join. But a new area has few of those, so the feed carries two other kinds alongside them, labelled rather than blended in.

Outing
Someone is hosting. A real time, a real place, a member running it.
Marquee
A real event, no host yet. Read from a venue's own calendar and credited to them.
Atlas
A place, nothing scheduled. Somewhere near you that fits your interests.

Nobody pays to appear in Atlas or Marquee. Paid placement exists, it is a separate thing, and it is always labelled on the card itself.

How the three differ, and what hosting a listing does →

The Filters sheet in the app. Under a heading reading Show, three checkboxes:
Outings — “Outings people are hosting”; Marquee Events — “Real events near you, no
host yet”; Atlas Listings — “Places you could plan something”. Below them: “Nothing
selected shows everything. Sponsored placements always appear.” A list of categories
                follows.

The Lounge

Say hello before you show up.

Turning up somewhere to meet people you've never met is the hard part, and it's easier if you've already spoken. The Lounge is where that happens — your friends list, one-to-one and group chats, and four small multiplayer games to break the ice with.

You can only play with friends you have already added — no random matchmaking, no lobby of strangers.

The Arcade is in the app, on iPhone and Android. The browser version covers finding and hosting Outings, chat and your profile.

The four games, and how the Lounge works →

A Word Hunt round in progress: a grid of letters with SQUASH, ENGAGEMENT, COMMUNITY,
HOSPITAL and ETCHING traced out on it, a running score, and a list of the words
                found so far.

Safety

Meeting people is your call. These are the tools.

We don't vet the people you meet, and we won't pretend otherwise. There are no background checks, and a badge on a profile is not a character reference — it means a document was checked, nothing more. Who you meet, where, and whether to go at all is your judgement to make.

  • Tell someone where you are

While you're checked in, friends you choose can see your live location — and only then.

  • Verified identity

Through Stripe. Anyone hosting a paid event must.

  • Block and report

Blocking is immediate and mutual. Reports go to moderators with your reason.

  • Lock the app itself

A PIN or Face ID lock, separate from your phone's.

Wanderist is 18+. We ask for your date of birth at sign-up. Our terms set out what we do and do not check, in the same words as above.

at Middlesex Fells Reservation, Verified, 2 of 8 going, and a button on its edge
for adding it to a calendar.

Going out

Find something near you, ask to join, check in when you get there, and keep the people you meet.

The Requests screen in the app: Theo Park, verified, wants to join and is marked
“First time doing this”; Marcus Webb and Priya Natarajan, both verified, want to
join. Their photos are a succulent, a dog and a sunflower, and each row has a red
decline button and a green approve button.

For hosts

Hosting an Outing

Anyone can host, free. If you want to charge for a ticketed event, take payouts, and check guests in by QR code, that's built too.

A feed card under a tab reading Games: Needs a host, Community Board Game Night, Oct
27 2026 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at Larkfield Community Studio, 0.2 miles away,
matching Board Games, the line “Tap to host this.”, an Interested button showing 4,
and a line reading “Listed by Larkfield Community Studio · from their calendar”.

For venues

Venues and advertisers

Reach people by interest and distance, or ask a local host to run their next event at your venue.
